Outside story option: Story due at end of term. Counts as government meeting (Academic Senate).
Kathy Wilbur, who was recently designated by the Board of Trustees to be
interim president until a replacement for Mike Rao is found, will
address faculty at 5:00 pm on Tuesday, April 28th, immediately following
the Academic Senate meeting, in Dow 102. This will be her first
opportunity to introduce herself to the faculty, and all faculty and
other interested individuals are invited to attend.

Outside option: Gentle Friday

Outside story option: Gentle Friday, story due at end of your final exam period.
Cover Gentle Friday, noon to 5 p.m. Friday in the Warriner Mall. Go for at least an hour. Use your senses. Describe what you see and hear and smell. Interview at least five sources, including at least one person working the event. Identify everyone by name, class standing, hometown and major. If not faculty or staff, identify by name, department and job.

‘Shattered Glass’ on tap for Monday, Wednesday

There will be no more quizzes.
Your final will be a speed-day exercise, assignment TBA.

What’s up in class for rest of week

Wednesday is an informal work day in both the 9 and 11 a.m. sections of 312.
Use the time to work on your features about Joe Karle (9 a.m.) and Christina Staten (11 a.m.). I’ll coach. You don’t have to turn anything in on Wednesday. Work on the stories some more at home and turn them in on Friday.
Be ready for a quiz on Friday. There will be current events, math and AP style.
We’ll take a look at some of the Pulitzer Prize winning material on Friday. Prizes were announced Monday. The Free Press was a winner for its coverage of Kwame Kilpatrick.

Outside option: Forum TODAY on newspaper future

Outside story option: Event is TODAY at 3:30 p.m. Story due Friday.

“Michigan’s newspaper industry: our past, present and future” is the topic of a forum scheduled from 3:30 to 5 p.m. Tuesday, April 21, in the Baber Room of Park Library.
Journalism professionals from around the state will gather for a panel discussion on the future of newspapers. The event is free and open to the public.
A reception and tour of Clarke Historical Library’s current exhibit “Celebrating Two Centuries of Michigan Newspapers” will follow the discussion.
CMU Journalism Professor Dennis Jeffers will moderate. Panelists include:
• Lonnie Peppler-Moyer, president of the Michigan Press Association and president and publisher of Monroe Publishing;
• Laura Varon Brown, audience editor and columnist for the Detroit Free Press and member of its digital transition team;
• Tony Dearing, former editor of the Flint Journal and now content director of annarbor.com; and
• Mike McLaren, executive director of the Michigan Press Association.

Outside story option: Sponsor of Matt’s Law to speak

schools safe for the GLBTQ community) will be speaking at 7
p.m. today (Tuesday) in the Bovee University Center auditorium (second floor
of the U.C.). The event is free.

Tuesday, April 14: Academic Senate, 3:30 p.m.
Tuesday, April 21: Isabella County board, 3 and 7 p.m.
Wednesday, April 22: Union Township Board, 7 p.m.
Thursday, April 23: CMU Trustees
Tuesday, April 28: Mount Pleasant Parks and Recreation Commission, 7 p.m.
Remember that meeting stories are due during the first class period after the meeting takes place.

Outside option: Reception for Michael and Monica Rao

Outside story option. Story Due Monday, April 27.
The CMU Board of Trustees is hosting a communitywide farewell reception for President Rao and Monica Rao on Thursday, April 23, 1 to 3 p.m. in the Bovee University Center Rotunda. The reception is scheduled to coincide with the Board of Trustees meeting that morning and prior to the end of the academic year. All are welcome to attend.

Here are a bunch of outside story options. Due dates listed at end of each notice.

A Soup and Substance discussion, “Gay Marriage Killed the Dinosaurs: Dispelling the Myths of Same-Sex Marriage and Families,” is at noon Tuesday, April 14 in the Bovee University Center Maroon and Gold rooms. This free lunch celebrates Pride Week at CMU. Co-sponsored by Office of Gay and Lesbian Programs, Gay Straight Alliance and SBAC. Story is due Friday, April 17.

The Center for Global Sport Leadership will feature Richard Lapchick in its Distinguished Lecture Series on Sport Leadership at 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 14, in the Bovee University Center Rotunda. Doors open at 6:45 p.m. Lapchick is a leading expert in diversity issues in sport, human rights activism and sport leadership. He played a prominent role in bringing racial equality in South African sports and is known as one of the 100 most powerful people in sports. He will discuss how to use sport for the greatest good. Open to the public. Story is due Friday, April 17.

CMU’s Minority Student Services, On The Fly, and the King-Chavez-Parks visiting professors will host Asian Pacific Heritage Month’s keynote speaker SuChin Pak at 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 14, in Warriner Hall’s Plachta Auditorium. Pak, born in South Korea, is a news correspondent for MTV and hosted her own MTV documentary about multicultural young people called “My Life.” Admission is free and open to the public. Story is due Friday, April 17.

On Tuesday, April 21, a “Fixing Lansing” forum will be held at 8 p.m. in the Park Library Auditorium. Among the panelists are:
- CMU alumnus Craig DeRoche, former Speaker of the Michigan House of Representatives.
- State Representative Ken Horn.
- Mackinac Center for Public Policy Analyst Ken Braun .
- Michigan Taxpayers Alliance President Leon Drolet, a former state representative from Macomb County.
- Americans for Prosperity Director Scott Hagerstrom.
Former State Representative and 2008 U.S. Senate candidate Jack Hoogendyk, who is executive director of Citizens’ Voice for Property Owners, will serve as moderator.
Story is due Friday, April 24.

Speaker Wednesday: Bach instead of Dearing

Tony Dearing had to cancel his sessions with us Wednesday, because he was called to a meeting with the owners in New York City. In his place, we will have Matt Bach, until recently a member of the Flint Journal online team.
Matt, like Tony, is a CMU journalism grad and will be on campus for the department’s Academic Homecoming.
Same deal — news conference, story finished in class on Friday.
